You've picked a very interesting topic. I've asked myself 'why' so many times too.

Divorce is all around us. My thoughts are that people just don't see marriage as an everlasting institution anymore, despite all the vows said at the ceremony itself.

I think people get married just to socially legitimise what they already have. If people didn't think that living together without getting married was wrong, then I think people wouldn't get married in the first place. Once the older generation is dead and gone, I think people are not going to get married anymore.

My other theory is just that people are ill-prepared for such a big commitment as marriage. They just don't think about it before they do it.

Instead of an act of will (which I believe is what love is - an act of will, and not a feeling), it is based on a whimsy feeling of being in love. And we all know that whimsical lovey dovey feeling doesn't last!

Divorce happens when people wake up to the realities of differences in perspectives and mindsets in living together. People today lack the patience and the will to ride through difficult times and crisis in marriages.

Also, mismatch in expectations and poor communications are important factors too. Ultimately, when people are unhappy in marriage, do they confront and resolve the problems?

Too often, the favourite solution is the instant solution, divorce. And like the domino effect, they bring the same mindset and values to a second or third marriage
