The new executive committee (Exco) of the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) has been given a vote of no confidence at Saturday's extraordinary general meeting. The vote of no confidence was passed against the new Exco, with a margin of 1,414 votes to 761 votes.

The motion to remove the new Exco from office was passed, and the motion to elect a new president was also passed.

Former president Dana Lam has been nominated for post of President, while Chew I-Jin has been proposed for Vice President post. The committee sees the return of several Old Guards to the helm, but half the 12-women line-up were new faces.

Lam said her first task would be to arrange for transition of office and to restore confidence that has been lost over the last few weeks. Her team would also look into amending the constitution to prevent another leadership grab similar to the one that happened on March 28. Future candidates seeking office on the Exco may have to be an AWARE volunteer for at least a year before they are eligible to do so.

While they were not legally bound to resign, Josie Lau's exco said they would do so "for the sake of AWARE" and would continue to remain as members.
