EPISODE 4 - Financial Independence: Free at Last

Free and enjoying life, when you are 50 years old…

There is not fixed definition for “financial independence”. But for most people it translates to having a fully-paid out home and the freedom NOT to work if you don't want to.

Is this just a pipe dream? Is it something we can only hope to have but not get in reality? In this episode, we examine how you can work your way to financial independence. We speak to a financial planner and a working couple who are on their way to being free… at last.

With the belief that “we control our job rather than our job controls us,” accountants Kenneth and Eileen started planning for freedom in thirties. Their plan – build a nest egg of S$1.2million by the time they are 50. Currently, the married couple is staying in a fully paid HDB flat, saving at least 40% of their combined monthly income. For them, having a choice to retire is important and they hope to live off the interest generated from their capital.

Gwen Ling, from IPP Financial Advisers, is Kenneth and Eileen's personal financial planner. She believes that it is possible for everyone to be financially independent by the age of 50 and shares with Lin how you can get there.
