He is a legendary investor who made his fortune in the currency market. In 1992 he shorted the pound and earned 1 billion US dollars in the process. While some may call him an opportunist, George Soros has been an active philanthropist since the 1970s – he has given away an estimated 6 billion US dollars since.

In 2006, Soros gave fifty million US dollars to Millenium Promise, which aims to end extreme poverty worldwide. He calculated it was worth taking this risk based on two aspects: using $500 to move one family out of poverty is justifiable, and if the villagers succeed, it will bring about systemic change elsewhere.

His belief when it comes to philanthropy: ''There is no substitute for firsthand engagement.''
