1960s
16 Sep 1963 Singapore merges with Malaysia.
21 Sep 1963 The first General Election is held following independence from Britain. The PAP wins 37 out of 51 seats in Parliament, garnering 46.60 percent of the vote. The pro-communist Barisan Sosialis captures 13 seats and the United People’s Party one. The PAP trounces Singapore UMNO in all three Malay-dominated constituencies.
9 Aug 1965 Singapore separates from Malaysia and becomes independent.
13 April 1968 The PAP, returned unopposed in 51 seats, wins all 58 seats with 84.43 percent of the vote in the country’s first General Election since independence. It will be the only party elected to Parliament until 1981.
