Smart Bombs:
Is Iraq the testing grounds?

The United States is developing new weapons, and Iraq could be the testing ground.

The war will be intense, with the US using ground troops and high tech weaponry.

Before the Gulf War, Saddam promised his people that he found a way of blinding the Americans.

Their ground to air defenses are becoming better.

Experts say that the Iraqis are not savvy in terms of electronic warfare.

So far behind the US in technology that one even said that Iraq could be as far as 10 - 20 years behind the US in that area.

Smart bombs first made their appearance in the Gulf war in 1991.

Since then, these precision guided bombs have been redefined and tested in conflict areas like Serbia and most recently, Afghanistan.

Now, these smart bombs are not only smarter but deadlier. What makes them deadlier are the brains behind it.

The JDAM or joint direct-attack munition.

Once attached to a standard bomb, the JDAM will steer the bomb to within meters of its target based on information sent from either the plane that dropped it or a satellite.

To launch the bombs, planes like the B-1 and B-2 will be used.

The planes are capable of dropping close to two dozen bombs in one pass and the effect could be devastating.

Tackling weapons of mass destruction, which may be deeply buried, may see Washington using "agent defeat" weapons.

These produce heat so intense it kills spores in biological weapons and breaks down the poisons in chemical weapons.
