With a war against Iraq and
the broader war against terror, America is essentially fighting
on two fronts.
But one big question is, whether the US has
enough resources for both, and whether a conventional war
in the Middle East increases America's vulnerability to future
terror attacks.
Political Scientist from NUS, Professor
Bilveer Singh said, "The US is the world superpower.
Once it mobilises its resources there is nothing that can
stop it. It is a juggernaut. It's an unstoppable juggernaut
and Saddam cannot stop it."
Unstoppable it may be but other analysts
are worried that the broader war on terror could be influenced
adversely by a war on Iraq.
They point to the recently postponed joint
US-Philippines anti-terrorist exercises.
The official reason provided by Manila
was the lack of immediate funding for the exercise.
Dr Kumar Ramakrishna from the Institute
of Defence and Strategic Studies, NTU commented, "But
some analysts are concerned that this is a cover. The real
reason is Americans are concerned that troops particular special
forces stationed in southern Philippines might be bogged down
in operations against the Abu Sayyaf. Washington prefers to
deploy these special forces in the Middle East in the event
of any hostilities against Iraq. In the final analysis, despite
its great power, despite what the French call the "hyper
power status" of the US, its resources are still limited,
there is still a finite limit to what America can do at the
same time."
