The American Embassy and American Association
in Singapore will hold a closed-door memorial service on Wednesday
morning to observe the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
At the American Embassy's driveway entrance,
workmen are busy fixing a 68 kilogram bell on the yoke.
The bell, on loan from St Ignatius Church, will
be tolled to honour the victims from over 90 countries.
In remembrance of the lives lost on September
11, members of the public are invited to come by the American
Embassy at Napier Road on Wednesday morning from 9am onwards
to ring the bell, and to show their commitment to make the
world a better place.
Joanne Blakemore, President, American Association
of Singapore, said, "Singaporeans became our extended
family during the last year, and so in recognition of that,
and to say 'thank you', and to really feel that Singaporeans
are participating with us as part of the same community, we
would like all Singaporeans to come and ring the bell with
us."
The public can toll the bell until 8.45pm on
Wednesday.
After that, people at churches, temples and
mosques all over Singapore will observe a moment of silence
at 8.46pm.
That was the exact moment the first hijacked
plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center
in New York last year.
