Deputy Prime Minister Lee
Hsien Loong has said that the recent ISD arrests of members
of the Jemaah Islamiyah group do not mean the end of the fight
against terrorism in Singapore.
Brigadier-General Lee, who cautioned that anything
could happen, said there could be other developments as other
militant groups like JI could emerge.
He was speaking to the media after a dedication
ceremony for ExxonMobil's Chemical Plant on Jurong Island
on Friday.
DPM Lee said: "We're in this region, we
must expect some of the issues to spill over to us.
"What we can do is to to make sure that
we're vigilant, take precautions and when something happens,
we try to make sure we find out and do something about it.
"I think if you look at what we've been
able to do with the JI group, you would have confidence that
our people are on top of the job and know what they are doing,
and able to get to the bottom of the matter."
General Lee also stressed that the Singapore
Government would do whatever necessary to protect infrastructure
and investment.
"We are aware of the concerns of our investors.
JTC Corporation has therefore introduced stringent and thorough
checks on vehicles and people coming to Jurong Island.
"A task force has also been set up to look
into longer term measures for the security of the island,
bearing in mind to strike a balance between safety and efficiency.
"We will monitor the situation, and will
not spare any effort to ensure the security and safety of
Jurong Island and all who work here."
Jurong Island, which houses the bulk of Singapore's
petrochemical industry, is one possible terrorist target in
the wake of the September 11 attacks.
