One of the three Singaporeans
reportedly arrested by Malaysian authorities for their links
to the Jemaah Islamiyah group is not a Singaporean, says the
Home Affairs Ministry.
Shukry Omar Talib alias Shukry Omar had renounced
his citizenship in 1987.
The Ministry says Shukry is the brother-in-law
of Faiz Abu Bakar Bafana and Fathi Abu Bakar Bafana, both
of whom have been detained under the Internal Security Act
in Singapore.
As for the other two men - Muhamad Ismail Anuwarul
and Abdul Nasir Anuwarul - they are brothers who are now permanent
residents in Malaysia.
The Ministry gave the information in a statement
on Saturday in response to media queries on the recent arrests
in Malaysia and the Philippines.
It adds that the arrest of Fathur Rohman Al
Ghozi in the Philippines is an example of the close cooperation
between the Internal Security Department (ISD) and its foreign
counterparts in the fight against international terrorism.
An Indonesian, Fathur Rahman, who is said to
be a bomb-maker with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, was
arrested arising from information the ISD had shared with
Philippines.
Fathur Rahman has been identified by the ISD
detainees as "Mike" whom they have worked with,
and is linked to the second operations cell "Fiah Musa".
And "Mike" had visited Singapore in
October 2001.
Assisted by the cell members, they conducted
surveillance of several establishments, including the US Embassy,
the Australian High Commission, the British High Commission,
the Israeli Embassy, and commercial buildings where there
are American companies.
They also video-recorded what they surveyed
for use in their planning.
But all members of the "Fiah Musa"
were arrested last December before they could proceed further.
