Tan Bee Leng was appointed Channel NewsAsia’s China Correspondent based in Shanghai in 2004.
Besides reporting on the political and socio-economic developments in Shanghai, Bee Leng has travelled to many other Chinese cities like Heilongjiang, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, Jiangsu, Zhejiang to file news stories and produce features and documentaries.
Among her other major foreign assignments are the Asian Tsunami Crisis in Phuket and the Indonesia Parliamentary and Presidential elections in Jakarta. Bee Leng has travelled to Washington D.C. to cover the USA Presidential Elections in 2004 and to New York in 2002 to cover the 1st Anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
Before joining Channel NewsAsia, she was a Journalist-Presenter at Mediacorp News where she reports and hosts on the news programmes for MediaCorp TV’s Chinese channels.
She received the "Best News Reporting Award" at the Star Awards 2003 for her coverage on the SARS situation in Singapore. The following year, she clinched the award once again for her report on Singapore Prime Minister’s Swearing-In ceremony. Her coverage of the Nicoll Highway Collapse also earned her a nomination for the same award.
Before appearing on TV screens across Singapore, Bee Leng was a Producer-Presenter with Radio Singapore International, covering major events such as Taiwan's Presidential Elections in Taipei (2000) and China's 50th National Day in Beijing (1999).
Prior to her foray into media, she worked as a Legal Translator for two of Singapore's largest law firms. Bee Leng is effectively bilingual in Mandarin and English.
Bee Leng graduated with a Bachelor’s degree (Merit) from the National University of Singapore, majoring in Chinese Studies and Chinese Language (with an emphasis on translation studies). |
