Our hosts travel to Palm Beach Hotel in Aoshima. Pay a visit there to the Aoshima Shrine, dedicated to three local gods, including the God of Marriage. Then take the Nippo Line to nearby Kiyotake, which produces quality oranges - the famous Hyuga-natsu. Afterwards pay a visit to the Daio Wasabi Farm where you get Azuminos wasabi which is well known across the country. Sample some wasabi ice-cream there which is very popular during Spring.
After that, head to Jounenbou, a hot spring hotel in Hotaka-onsengou and feast on a variety of wild vegetables for dinner. An hour's ride on the Shinano train brings you to Chikuma, which is Japan's top apricot producing region.
At Yui, catch the auctions held during the sakura shrimp fishing season. This is where you can try the pink sakura shrimp which is strictly seasonal and can be eaten raw, cooked or sun dried. Then go westward to Mihou, a peninsula adjacent to Suruga Bay which features Miho-matsubara, one of Japan’s biggest pine forests.
Finally, head to the Shimada station, which is a place famous for its tea. Go across the Oigawa River and the world's longest wooden bridge, the Horai Bridge, which stretches 897 metres, to Horaibashi. Across the river, there are many tea fields to tour before sampling some of the tea which made Shimada famous in the first place. |
