Kozu-shima is 1800km from Tokyo, located in the middle of the Izu Archipelago with a coastline of about 33km. Once on the island, take a 10 minute drive from the pier and arrive at the Shinbei inn. The inn was refurbished in April, after 39 years . Apart from being new, the location of the inn, which is just a stone's throw away from the inn, makes this a perfect location for any vacation, especially one for the family. The hotel which is family-run will provide local tours on request.

First up, head to "Buttooshi Iwa" rock to enjoy some splendid views of the island. Head to the observatory where you can see Miura Bay and Tenjyou san. Just offshore, there is a famous diving spot named Zakune where you can swim among coral fish. Those who are more experienced can snorkel for shellfish such as Osada the island's specialty.

To get a flavour of local life, hop on a boat and join a fishermen out for a day's catch. The currents around Kozu Island are suitable for Alfonsino, a local specialty. The fisherman will carefully observe the currents before choosing the right hook line and depth to drop into the sea. Flame Snappers and Japanese Snappers are commonly found in that area but you can also catch the Blue Mackerel.

On this island, there is a famous hot spring - Kozu Island hot spring - which is located on the southern tip of the island. It uses the surrounding rocks to create an outdoor bath which is nicely located just by the sea. Dinner at the fisherman's hotel will include the day's harvest from the sea which is served both in Japanese and Western-styled dishes. Breakfast will be Japanese-styled with treats such as grilled fish which is typical fisherman fare.

Next stop, Noto Peninsula located in Ishikawa Prefecture. Wajima city is located on the north side of the Noto Peninsula and it is one of Japan's most important fishing ports. First up, head to the famous market with about 200 shops. Anything and everything ranging from seafood to eateries can be found here. As expected, the best purchases will include items such as seaweed and dried fish such as mackerel and even blowfish. Don't miss out on Ishiru, which are soaked in special sauce and is traditional of Wajima city.

To get to the Isaribiyou Hot Spring Inn, head towards the old train station. It should also bear a sign of the hotel, which actually sits along the coast of the Sea of Japan and can be reached by car. The hotel was built more than 100 years ago on the Kouninyou and it's a hiddn treasure as it offers commanding views of the Sea of Japan. The hotel offers old world charm from its furniture to its fireplace. There is also one part called the Urusinoma room which is full of objects covered with Wajima paint, including the room's ceiling and wooden beams.

Guests can ask for a complimentary tour of the bay which is conducted by members of the family who run the hotel. Look out for unusual rock formations created by the lapping waves of the sea and join fishermen catch littleneck fish which is common in the area. After your trip out to the sea, take a relaxing dip in the hot spring. Dinner at the hotel consists of freshly caught littleneck, striped beakfish, and 'seaside hot pot' which is vegetables in stew. Turn in early if you plan to join the fishermen the next day, as the wake-up call is 4am ! The pay-off is a seafood breakfast fresh off the boat. Net fishing is only done during the period of spring to autumn and fish such as flounder, squid, thread-sail filefish and amberjack can be caught during this time.

Another inn worth a visit is in Sawada, a small fishing town west of the Izu Peninsula. It's a one hour bus ride from Shimoda station and will run along the coast of Surukawa.

Arrive at Tacco Izu Blue Inn with a distinctive octupus on its signboard. It offers four Japanese style rooms and 3 Western bedrooms. You will be able to enjoy breathtaking mountain views from all the rooms and not to add, the freshest fish. The Tacco Izu Blue Inn is another family-run hotel and the head of the household can often be found out at sea. The fish caught go to the famed Tokyo Fish Market, with just some making their way to the hotel kitchen.

You can tag along with the fishermen to watch how fish is caught. Common in the area is Amber striped scad. Alternatively, visit Orihama Bay, a public swimming beach and go snorkeling to pick up shellfish and abalone for your meal. Since Izu is known for its hot springs, check out some but don't miss a visit to Sawada Park's outdoor hot spring which has the sea laid out before you as you soak.

Head back to the inn for a delicious dinner consisting of a luxury sashimi platter with items caught the same day, as well as soy sauce squid stew and seaweed dishes. Other than that, mackerel hot pot is also served with a soup base that has white radish, ginger and vinegar. Vegetables on the table are also freshly harvested from the hotel's garden. A stay at the hotel costs only 10000 yen (S$130). The next morning, head out to do more fishing. This time, fish for some sardines which can be made into sashimi or boiled for breakfast.
