This week, continue the search for inns located above clouds or at sea.
Start your journey at Ogizawa in Nagano prefecture and head to Murodo, 2450 metres above sea level. This is where you'll find Japan's highest hot spring inn. In order to reach the inn, you have to take four types of transportation. First up, hop on a zero emission electric bus, and head to Kurobe Dam.
Arrive at Kurobe Dam, which is Japan's largest dam and took seven years to build. It began operating in 1963 and collects all the water from the nearby mountains. While there, try out the curry at the Kurobe Dam restaurant nearby. The curry uses spinach as its base, two fried pork chops are placed on the sauce, while the rice sits in the shape of the dam, with the macaroni salad as the water.
After lunch, take a 15 minutes walk across the dam to reach Kurobeko Station. From here, take a 5 minute cable car ride to get to the mountain top. Next, use the ropeway and hop on the bus to get to the top. After about 2 hours of travelling from Ogizawa, you will finally arrive at the top of Murodo.
Visit Mt. Tate, where Tamato Spring, one of the best natural springs in Japan awaits. A 15 minute walk from there brings you to Mikuriga hot spring inn. Originally, the inn was a mountain hut. After 15 years of development, it has become the inn it is today. There are a grand total of 26 rooms, all with tatami mats.
The spring water in this hot spring is pumped up from the Jigoku Valley, a natural underground spring. After a refreshing bath, head to Toyama Bay and enjoy their fresh seafood. Remember to try out the shrimp sasimi and famous Toyama squid. The next day, head for the observation deck.Do this in the morning and watch the beautiful sunrise from the top of the Northern Alps.
On the next day, take a bus to the Midagahara plateau. There are 3000 small ponds on the plateau called Kagida. On the plateau as well are many species of wild flowers. Next, hop on the Bullet train and travel for 1 hour and 10 mins to your next destination - Karuizawa. It is a European-styled hotel on top of the clouds, located between Nagano and Gunma prefectures.
After enjoying the greenery, head to the tourist hot spot - the old Ginza shopping street. Make a stop at the Terakoya main store which specialises in grilled rice cakes. Their most popular is the rice cake with their very own homemade mayonnaise. Another shop to visit is Cerfeuil Karuizawa, a shop specialising in jams. In this shop, you can find over 400 types of jams and sauces and every one of them is handmade and preservative-free.
Take time to also visit a pottery workshop and the trendiest restaurant in Karuizawa. The set lunch in the restaurant includes rice cooked in a copper pot and many side dishes which you can choose. After lunch, it's time to head to the hotel above the clouds. A 50 minute bus ride takes you to the Takamine Plateau Hotel, located 2000 metres above sea level. The hotel rooms have tatami beds and come with a brilliant view of nearly the whole of Nagano prefecture.
Head out and visit a field nearby which belongs to the hotel. If you pay 500 yen (S$6.50), you can pick your own vegetables to take back home. Later on, head to the bathhouse with a huge window to allow customers to enjoy the beautiful views whilst bathing.
Dinner is prepared by a chef originally from Miyaga prefecture. He uses wild vegetables to prepare a Western style feast, made such as soup and salad made from fresh greens. Next, enjoy the Kesennuma flat fish en Papillote and beef fillet with wasabi butter.
Four hours out of Tokyo on the Sanyouhon Line, will bring you to Onomichi, an historic town resting by the mouth of the Setouchi Sea, famous for its ocean and mountains. First, take the ropeway to the Senkou temple - a national treasure of Japan. Then, head to Onomichi's main shopping street and visit a soya bean shop built in the Meiji period. Visit Jikou Temple next and be amazed by the grabbing statue there. Anyone can make a Buddha by grabbing the clay dough. After grabbing the dough, make the face and leave it to dry for five days. The monks will send your creation to you.
Head to Yasuhiro restaurant - famous for it's local seafood for lunch. In summer, Onomichi has the finest red spotted grouper, said to be the king of white flesh. Eel and minced shrimp sushi is another great summer dish.
After a nice lunch, head to the hotel. Hop on the bus to Inoshima and it will take you to the port of Habu. Arrive at Nautique, Shiroyama, your hotel for the night which is located on a hill by the ocean. The hotel is built in the shape of a ship and it floats on the Setouchi Sea, Nautique, Shiroyama.
Have a Setouchi style seafood dinner of salad with eight different types of seafood in it, wrasse tempura with a french blue cheese sauce, fresh shrimp pizza, white pomfret poler with diablo sauce make up some of the various dishes served. The next morning, take a touring taxi and head to the Innoshima flower centre. The botanic gardens house over 5000 types of tropical plants. |
