18th October 2007, "Land Ho!! We have reached Salvador!" exclaimed one of the crew member.
After 26 days not having phone signal, this is a chance for me to contact home to say hi and "Selamat Hari Raya" to my love ones back in Singapore.
The last time we saw land was about 2 weeks ago and that was the Canaries. Phone signal was then, an intermittent with a low 1 bar shown on my Nokia 6670. Managed to only SMS text back home.
The lights from land gave me hopes with tall buildings reminded me of my home country, Singapore.
There was a big crowd to welcome us at Salvador da Bahia with fresh watermelons being served to the crew - it was very refreshing!!
Salvador is a lovely place, with amazingly nice people. Environment was filled with great drum beats from the local live bands.
We had lived in our own time capsule racing across the ocean, oblivious to the outside world, as remote as if we were on a spacecraft orbiting the moon.
The rites of passage to Salvador, the longest voyage any of us had undertaken, were a curtain raiser to the next act, Leg 2 to Durban across the South Atlantic. |
