More than two million people were displaced by the
Asian earthquake and tsunami disaster, and relief agencies
have warned the death toll could double from its near
150,000 unless aid reaches them soon.
The most urgent needs are for a clean water supply,
medicines, shelter and food, the UN and relief agencies
have said.
With more than two billion dollars pledged globally
in aid, world leaders attend a major international summit
here Thursday to decide how to co-ordinate relief efforts
for the 11 mostly Asian countries hit by tsunamis unleashed
by
the December 26 temblor.
Here is a country-by-country breakdown of people in
need in areas worst affected by the catastrophe.
India: About 370,000 people remain in 532 relief
camps spread over southern India and the far-flung Andaman
and Nicobar islands. The number of people in camps has
dropped from 500,000 last week, but the government lists
a total of more than 630,000 as having been moved to
safer places who require help getting basic necessities
as well as direction on how to apply for aid to rebuild
their lives.
Indonesia: Nearly 400,000 people are living in
temporary shelters and camps, according to the health
ministry. Most were driven or rescued from devastated
Aceh province and are now staying in temporary shelters.
Maldives: Some 100,000 people are "severely
affected", according to the United Nations, with
more than 13,000 people displaced. Several of the 20
atolls have contaminated water supplies and need clean
drinking water. Within six months 1,000 women are expected
to give birth, but 10 hospitals and health centres have
been severely damaged.
Malaysia: Up to 8,000 people, mostly women and
children were given temporary shelter in schools in
Kota Kuala Muda, Kedah. Deputy Prime Minister Najib
Razak said late Tuesday that all tsunami victims in
relief centres could return home, but transit homes
need to be built for those whose homes were destroyed.
Myanmar: Conditions in the country are hard to
assess, but the World Food Programme says up to 30,000
people are in immediate need of food, water and shelter.
More than 200 fishing villages face a loss of livelihood.
Somalia: The UN says about 54,000 people have
been affected and some 1,000 houses damaged or destroyed.
Sri Lanka: Up to one million people have been
displaced according to the government, with nearly 100,000
homes destroyed. Jan Egeland, the UN's emergency relief
coordinator, said 780,000 were lodged in some 800 camps
in the country.
Thailand: More than 20,000 Thai families from
villages along the coast in six affected coastal provinces
were affected.
