National Day Rally

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in his National Day Rally speech that Singapore has seen the worst of the current recession and although a subdued recovery is expected for the global economy, the country can still grow by sharpening its skills and enlarging its market share.

Mr Lee noted Singapore is already seeing positive signs with local companies like Hyflux expanding, and new business sectors - such as in the area of interactive digital media - growing in Singapore. And as Singapore transforms its economy, Mr Lee reminded workers to adapt and upgrade themselves.

The Prime Minister also spoke at length on the need to maintain social cohesion, particularly racial and religious harmony, which he said will continue to play an important role in Singapore's society.

National Day Message

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in his annual televised National Day Message that the 6.5 per cent contraction in Singapore's economy in the first half of this year was less bad than was feared.

He added that Singapore is now in a stronger position than at the start of the year and believed that as long as Singaporeans remain united in facing the challenges ahead, the country will pull through. Read the full speech and watch the video here.
