BEIJING: Chinese state media reported that five suspects “blew themselves up” during Thursday’s attack at a market in the restive Xinjiang region.

According to the Global Times newspaper on Friday, authorities are investigating if the suspects had accomplices.

31 people were killed and 94 injured in the capital Urumqi when two vehicles ploughed into the open-air market on Thursday morning, which was crowded with shoppers.

One of the vehicles was said to have exploded.

Photos posted on Chinese social media site Weibo showed people lying on the ground and items strewn across the street.

Other photos showed smoke billowing over market stalls.

Authorities described the attack as a “severe terrorist incident”, and Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed punishment for the culprits.
