GEORGE TOWN: The Bukit Gelugor parliamentary by-election nomination process proceeded smoothly until its closure at 10 am on Monday, with submissions by four candidates.
The candidates were Ramkarpal Singh from DAP, Parti Cinta Malaysia's (PCM) Datuk Huan Cheng Guan and independents Mohamed Nabi Bux Mohd Nabi Abdul Sathar and Abu Bakar Sidek Mohd Zan.
Barisan Nasional (BN) did not field a candidate after MCA decided not to contest the seat.
The first candidate to arrive at the nomination centre in Dewan Sri Pinang was Huan at 8.50 am. He was accompanied by more than 20 supporters.
Ramkarpal arrived at 9.03 am with his mother Gurmit Kaur and DAP supporters, led by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and PKR President Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
The seat fell vacant following the death of the MP, Karpal Singh of the DAP, in an accident on the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung in Kampar, Perak, on April 17.
Polling day is scheduled for May 25.
