Malaysia's DAP, PKR back Wan Azizah as chief minister candidate

Malaysia’s Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) on Tuesday (Aug 26) expressed support for Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the sole candidate for Selangor state’s chief minister post.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) on Tuesday (Aug 26) expressed support for Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the sole candidate for Selangor state’s chief minister post.

In a joint statement, the parties said the decision to back Wan Azizah was in line with 2013, when incumbent Abdul Khalid Ibrahim was also the sole nominee despite the Selangor sultan asking for more candidates.

Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah had on Tuesday ordered the leaders in the opposition pact comprising PAS, PKR and DAP to propose more than two names from each party as candidates for the chief minister post. According to Abdul Khalid, this was to make it easier for the sultan to decide on the most eligible candidate for the post.

PAS did not sign the statement backing Wan Azizah as the chief minister candidate.

The sultan also postponed accepting the resignation of Abdul Khalid until the appointment of a new chief minister has been resolved.

If appointed, Wan Azizah, the wife of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, will be the first woman in Malaysia to become a chief minister.
