MALAYSIA: Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak has announced that he will defend the ruling party UMNO presidency at the upcoming party polls on October 19.
The UMNO state liaison bodies have passed resolutions for him to continue to lead.
Mr Najib said: "It's with great humility that I accept the support and offer myself to defend the party president post. With your mandate and trust, I hope to continue our struggle to strengthen the party for the sake of our religion, race and country."
When asked if he expects to see challengers in the coming polls, Mr Najib replied: "Why don't we wait for Saturday, your question will be answered in due course."
Official nominations begin on Saturday – that is when any possible challengers can make their stand clear.
But with no credible challengers in sight, Mr Najib is expected to sail through the party elections.
The party polls were postponed for 18 months because of the 13th General Elections.
For the first time, over 130,000 UMNO division leaders will be choosing their leaders directly compared to 2400 central delegates who got to decide in previous elections.
The elections for UMNO's three wings will take place on October 12 while the supreme council polls will be held a week later.
