BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Thursday called on East Asia Summit members to work together to foster growth and maintain peace and stability in the region.
Mr Lee made the call at the East Asia Summit, held as part of the ASEAN Summit in Brunei.
Mr Lee said one way to achieve this is to strengthen economic relations.
He said the two fruitful rounds of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership this year was a significant milestone in cooperation.
Mr Lee said negotiators must be empowered to conclude a good quality agreement and solve difficult issues with creativity and flexibility.
Maintaining peace and stability in Asia Pacific, and specifically in Asia, is equally important.
For the long term, Mr Lee said the most important determinant of regional stability is relations between the major powers and stable adjustments to the dynamic changes taking place in the global economy.
The third strategy to enhance cooperation within the East Asia Summit is through education.
In this regard, Singapore is looking forward to signing the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with India, on the establishment of the Nalanda University.
Singapore is helping to raise funds for the Nalanda University Library.
Members of the East Asia Summit have also supported the Masterplan on ASEAN Connectivity with funding, technology transfer and capability development.
