SINGAPORE: A South Korean diplomat in Chile is being investigated for allegedly sexually harassing a Chilean teenager, reported South Korean media on Monday (Dec 19).
This was caught on camera by a Chilean broadcaster which released a trailer on Sunday of a documentary programme featuring the alleged incident. The diplomat is accused of grabbing the 14-year-old girl by the waist and appeared to force her into a room.
According to Yonhap news agency, the incident happened in September while he was teaching her Korean. The girl reportedly tipped off the Chilean broadcaster, which began shadowing the diplomat and filmed him harassing another woman.
South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement on Monday apologising for what happened, saying it takes a "zero-tolerance" policy to such serious misdeeds. The ministry added that it plans to tighten discipline to prevent such cases from recurring.
The diplomat, who was in charge of cultural affairs at a South Korean foreign mission in Chile, has been suspended from his duties.
Yonhap also quoted the ministry saying that the diplomat will face a separate investigation when he returns to South Korea where he could face criminal charges.
