Shanmugam hopes Thailand’s different interests can be mediated

Singapore’s Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam has said he hopes some "structure or mechanism" can be found to mediate between the different interests in Thailand so that the nation can "move ahead".

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s Foreign Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam has said he hopes some "structure or mechanism" can be found to mediate between the different interests in Thailand so that the nation can "move ahead".

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a community event at Yishun on Sunday morning, Mr Shanmugam said the Thai conflict has ramifications on the rest of the region as Thailand is ASEAN's second largest economy.

He said he had met Thailand's Acting Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow and expressed concerns about the situation in the country.

Mr Shanmugam said: "We have a vision of ASEAN 2015 next year, we want to be a credible ASEAN and we want ASEAN to play a central role in the regional architecture.

"Anything that impacts on any ASEAN member, let alone a country like Thailand, will of course impact on all of us.

“We have got to try and make sure that our vision of a 2015 ASEAN community stays on track.”
