TIANJIN: Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong said high-level support from both Singapore and China is a key ingredient for the success of the Tianjin Eco-city.
Mr Goh said this during his visit to Tianjin to mark the fifth anniversary of the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city (TEC).
Members of the Singapore delegation included National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who is currently in charge of the Tianjin Eco-city project.
Mr Goh met Tianjin Party Secretary Sun Chunlan on Saturday.
Both leaders affirmed that the project had made good progress since its inception.
They also reviewed the opportunities and challenges of the eco-city going forward.
The leaders expressed confidence that it can become a model for sustainable development, which can be replicated in other cities in China as directed by President Xi Jinping when he visited the eco-city in May this year.
Mr Goh, who first raised the idea of the eco-city to then-Premier Wen Jiabao, described the TEC as his baby.
He said he felt a rich sense of responsibility towards the project and as a father, naturally wants to see how the baby has grown. More importantly, he said it is to watch how the baby grows into adulthood.
Mr Goh also invited Party Secretary Sun to visit Singapore at the earliest opportunity.
Mr Goh also visited the Dongjiang Free Trade Port Zone.
