UMNO's attacks on lawyer an attempt to interfere with appeal: Anwar

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has blamed UMNO for orchestrating attacks on his lawyer N Surendran in an attempt to interfere with his appeal of a controversial sodomy conviction.

MALAYSIA: Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has blamed UMNO for orchestrating attacks on his lawyer N Surendran in an attempt to interfere with his appeal of a controversial sodomy conviction.

In a statement to the media released on Monday (Aug 18), Anwar claimed that the "campaign of intimidation" against his lawyer was orchestrated by "top UMNO leadership" with the intention of preventing him from getting a fair hearing.

Anwar claims that UMNO leader Mukhriz Mahathir has called on all UMNO divisions to lodge police reports against his lawyer, and that the UMNO-owned Ututsan Malaysia has published an editorial calling for action against the lawyer. This was after Mr Surendran had said in a press conference that the charges against Anwar were a political conspiracy involving Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak.

In March, Anwar was convicted of sodomising a former male aide Saiful Bukhari Azlan and was sentenced to five years' jail.
