HONG KONG: A housewife in Hong Kong has appeared at the Kwun Tong Magistrates Court, charged with abusing three Indonesian domestic helpers.
Lo Wan-Tong faces two counts of wounding with intent, one count of common assault, and three counts of criminal intimidation.
The 44-year-old Lo arrived in a police van on Wednesday afternoon.
She is alleged to have badly beaten Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, her former 23-year-old domestic helper, who is now recovering at a hospital in Central Java.
The case has bought much national and international media attention, and highlights the vulnerability of foreign domestic helpers working in Asia.
Two other former maids have also since come forward to report abuse at Lo's hands.
No plea was taken in court, and the case has been adjourned until March 25.
Lo is now out on bail of US$128,000, and the court has seized her travel documents.
She was arrested on Monday trying to flee the territory.
