Britain's deficit widened in April, the first month of the government's new financial year, official data showed on Thursday.

LONDON: Britain's deficit widened in April, the first month of the government's new financial year, official data showed on Thursday.

The state's net borrowing stood at £11.5 billion ($19.4 billion, 14.19 billion euros) last month compared with £9.5 billion one year earlier, the Office for National Statistics said in a statement.

Official data released on Thursday confirmed that Britain's economy grew by 0.8 per cent in the first quarter.
