French jobless ranks rise to new record in April

PARIS: The number of registered unemployed in France climbed by 0.04 per cent in April to a record of 3.36 million, the labour ministry said on Wednesday, in a further setback for the government.

The ministry said "the figures reflect the trend observed since the beginning of the year."

The government of President Francois Hollande has so far been unable to deliver on his key campaign pledge of halting the rise in unemployment.

The overall number of jobseekers has increased by some 440,000 since he took office in May 2012.

Unhappiness with joblessness, austerity measures and stagnant growth cost the government dearly in recent municipal elections and were factors in a drubbing again on Sunday in European elections.
