Mobile operator promises end to roaming fees

A UK-based international mobile operator is promising Hong Kong residents an end to roaming charges, with flat-rate packages that cover calls, data and texts across 66 destinations.

HONG KONG: A UK-based international mobile operator is promising Hong Kong residents an end to roaming charges.

Truphone is the first carrier to offer flat-rate packages that cover calls, data and texts across 66 territories.

Alex Ip, senior vice president at Truphone, explained: “You don’t need to worry when you’re calling somebody, messaging somebody or using data in the 66 (listed territories).

“Even if you're in Hong Kong, if you want to do business in the US, for example, you can actually give your US number to your US customers, and it doesn't cost them anything because it's like a local call but you could be sitting anywhere in the zone, in the 66 destinations."

Business customers are set to benefit the most from the packages, said Ip, as the 66 destinations cover 70 per cent of business travel routes in the world.

Ip said Truphone is looking to expand in the next year, to provide coverage for more areas.
