New claims for US unemployment insurance benefits edged higher last week but remained close to the long-term trend, the US Labour Department said on Thursday.

WASHINGTON: New claims for US unemployment insurance benefits edged higher last week but remained close to the long-term trend, the US Labour Department said on Thursday.

New claims, which indicate the pace of layoffs across the US economy, rose to 339,000 in the week to February 8 from 331,000 the previous week.

The four-week moving average moved up to 336,750, compared to 333,250 last week and 356,500 a year ago.
