Focusing on sustainability makes business sense: Vivian Balakrishnan

There is a synergistic relationship between protecting the environment and running a profitable business, said the Environment and Water Resources Minister.

SINGAPORE: The relationship between environment and business is one of synergy, and not one where making more money means degrading the environment, said Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan at the 17th Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards on Thursday (Aug 21).

The awards ceremony was organised by the Singapore Environment Council, and recognised the efforts of eight companies to be more environmentally friendly. Some adopted waste heat recycling technology, while others cut their carbon footprint by implementing recycling and energy-saving measures.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Dr Balakrishnan said it makes business sense to focus on a sustainable environment, with advances in technology, and consumers and clients increasingly demanding to know whether resources are procured responsibly.

Among the companies recognised was the Grand Hyatt Singapore, which won the SEC-Senoko Energy Green Innovation Award. Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay won the SEC-Kimberly-Clark Singapore Environmental Achievement Award (Services), and Glaxo Wellcome Manufacturing won the SEC-CDL Outstanding Singapore Environmental Achievement Award.
