SINGAPORE: Singapore's retail sales fell 9.4 per cent in October compared to a year ago due to lower motor vehicle sales.
Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales was down 0.9 per cent - according to figures released by the Department of Statistics on Friday.
Motor vehicles reported 39.6 per cent decline in sales in October, compared to a year ago.
Sales of telecommunications apparatus and computers also fell 13.2 per cent in October year-on-year.
Similarly, retail sales of furniture and household equipment, watches and jewellery, and clothing apparel and footwear decreased between 1.4 per cent and 4.4 per cent over the previous year.
In contrast, retail sales of food and beverages, optical goods and books, department stores, supermarkets, medical goods and toiletries increased between 1.2 per cent and 4.4 per cent in October 2013 over the same period last year.
Compared to September, retail sales fell 3.2 per cent in October. However, excluding motor vehicles, retail sales was lower by 0.5 per cent.
