Singapore retail sales in December dampened by autos

Singapore retail sales fell 5.5 per cent in December from a year ago as fewer people bought cars and other motor vehicles, the Department of Statistics said on Friday.

SINGAPORE: Singapore retail sales fell 5.5 per cent in December from a year ago as fewer people bought cars and other motor vehicles, the Department of Statistics said on Friday.

Excluding motor vehicles, December retail sales edged 0.3 per cent higher from a year earlier.

Departmental stores in Singapore reported higher takings, along with retailers of medical goods and toiletries.

But sales of watches and jewellery dropped 6.3 per cent from a year ago, according to the department's retail index.
