The Cultural Revolution was a watershed in the history of China. From May 1966, Mao Zedong unleashed the Red Guards against the party. Anarchy and violence followed. Half a century later, the legacy of the Cultural Revolution continues to be pervasive in Chinese politics and society. Yet, there remains no real debate about this period inside the country.
