Lee Young-ae, the star of iconic Korean drama “Jewel in the Palace”, helped a Taiwan woman pay off massive medical bills chalked up after the woman gave birth prematurely while on tour in Korea.
TAIPEI: Korean actress Lee Young-ae proved a true gem when she secretly helped a Taiwan woman pay her medical bills, amounting to some NT$4 million (S$167,000), after she gave birth to her daughter prematurely in Seoul.
The “Jewel in the Palace” actress reportedly found out about the family after they sought help from a Korean charitable organisation.
The Taiwan woman had been touring Korea with her husband when she went into labour prematurely in February after suffering a fall.
The infant required two surgeries and constant medical care after she was born.
The charity revealed that Lee found out about the couple through her friend and decided to pay their medical bills, as she was moved by their plight and was a mother as well.
The child, who weighed just 1kg at birth, is now in good health and weighs 3.27kg.
The couple returned to Taiwan on Monday after Lee visited them on Sunday.
When contacted for comment, Lee’s lawyer said the actress did not want to draw attention to her involvement and declined to offer further details.
