Chinese celebrity couple Faye Wong and Li Yapeng are keeping mum after returning to Beijing from Urumqi where they filed for divorce. They have not spoken directly about why they split, sparking intense speculation over the matter.
BEIJING: Chinese singer Faye Wong announced Friday that she has ended her eight-year marriage to actor husband Li Yapeng in a message on her micro blog.
“Our fate as husband and wife has come to an end this lifetime. I am still okay. You take care too,” said Wong over her micro blog.
Li commented on their divorce soon after.
“What I want is a family, but you are destined to be a legend. I miss all the beautiful times in the past ten years.
“I still love you like before, it’s really regrettable. Letting go is the only thing I can do for you,” said Li in a micro blog post.
The 41-year-old went on to reveal that their seven-year-old daughter Li Yan will live with him after the divorce and that there will be no financial complications as they have always managed their finances independently prior to their split.
This is Wong’s second divorce.
In 1999, the 44-year-old singer divorced Chinese musician Dou Wei, with whom she has a daughter.
Paparazzi, nuns and extra-marital affairs
The paparazzi were out in force on Friday night, tailing Wong’s car at high speeds when she left the airport in Beijing after returning from Urumqi, where they filed for divorce earlier.
They even stopped her car twice in a bid to photograph her, reported Chinese media.
When the paparazzi swarmed Li at the airport after he returned to Beijing from Urumqi early Monday morning, an expressionless Li remained largely silent, and only said “What can I say?” as well as “Thank you”, before departing.
The two, have remained silent ever since they wrote about the divorce on their micro blogs, and have still not spoken directly about the reason behind their separation.
This has fuelled intense speculation over what caused them to go their separate ways.
One Chinese tabloid claimed that Wong had caught Li cheating on her, while another believed that their marriage came to an end after Wong said she wanted to become a nun, yet another claimed that Wong called it quits because she could not get along with Li’s mother.
Hong Kong actress Carina Lau, a close friend of the couple, has since dismissed rumours that Li had cheated on Wong as he is “not that kind of person”, and said that Wong will definitely get through this difficult time as she is a “calm, rational and strong person”.
