Smiles, tears and fears at Kim Soo-hyun's S'pore fan meeting

The South Korean ferry tragedy did not cast a shadow over actor Kim Soo-hyun's fan meeting in Singapore, but it was still a roller-coaster of emotions for the star and his fans.

SINGAPORE: It was a roller-coaster of emotions for South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun and his fans during the Singapore leg of his Asia tour.

There had been fears of a no-show, as there was pressure on South Korean celebrities to scale down their promotional activities following the Sewol ferry disaster that left 300 people dead or missing.

Kim had cancelled a media conference in Singapore in the wake of the tragedy, sparking fears that the fan meeting would also be called off.

Fanclub members also told Channel NewsAsia that they had initially planned to get the 2,800-strong audience to sing Bruno Mars’ “Marry You” and had printed cards with the song lyrics to distribute to those attending.

"We had wanted (to sing) to make this fan meeting more memorable for Kim Soo-hyun," Dessie Thiodora from fanclub Soomansg explained.

The idea was later dropped out of respect for those mourning the victims of the tragedy.

Despite the initial fears, fans later told Channel NewsAsia that they enjoyed the event.

The 26-year-old actor on Sunday kicked off his fan meeting at Singapore Expo on a high, belting out “Dreaming” to screaming fans.

Kim appeared chirpy, cracking jokes and teasing fans as the mostly-female audience lapped it all up, cheering and erupting in laughter.

The star also repeatedly encouraged his fans, who ranged from teenagers to middle-aged ladies, to let their hair down.

He told fans: “Don't look so serious, you're not here to learn!"

Most of the time, Kim had witty answers to questions posed to him, including what was in his travel luggage.

His answer?

"I don't bring a lot of luggage around. Maybe 30 pieces of underwear, that's all."

When asked what sort of superpower he would like to possess, Kim deadpanned: “I've a dangerous thought.”

But it was an anti-climax as he continued after a long pause: “Like Do Min-joon (his character in the drama “My Love from the Star”), it would be great if I could live for 400 years.”

Kim had propelled to fame after starring alongside Gianna Jun in "My Love from the Star", where he played an alien heart-throb.

Fans also had opportunities to get up close with Kim, with some invited onstage to pose for photos with him.

But there was a catch - Kim and the fans would have to re-enact poses from Kim’s past promotional posters, which usually also featured his female co-stars.

When selecting fans via a lucky draw, Kim quipped: “I’m worried because there’re more male fans here than I thought.”

But the fan meeting later took an emotional turn, with both fans and Kim crying as the two-hour event drew to a close.

Kim ended the night with the ballad “In Front of your House”, and was teary-eyed as he thanked the audience, who were screaming in unison "Kim Soo-hyun, I love you".

The actor on Friday had also ended his fan meeting in Indonesia on an emotional note as he thanked fans in tears, apparently touched by their support.
