Victoria Beckham auctions clothes to raise funds for fighting HIV

The fashion designer and former Spice Girl will be selling more than 600 pieces of her clothes to raise funds for mothers living with HIV in Africa.

LONDON: Fashion designer Victoria Beckham will be selling more than 600 pieces of clothing from her personal wardrobe to raise funds for mothers living with HIV in Africa.

Additionally, 10 exclusive items that have special personal significance for the former Spice Girl will be sold in a 'reverse auction' from August 20 to 24. These items have been valued by auction house Christie's and includes the white lace-up Dolce & Gabbana dress that she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003 (with husband David Beckham in a matching white suit). Interested buyers can sign up here.

All proceeds will be donated to mothers2mothers, a non-profit organisation that trains mothers living with HIV to combat the spread of the disease, by working with doctors and nurses in understaffed health centres as members of the healthcare team.

Beckham said she was inspired to take action after a visit to South Africa earlier this year with Vogue editor Anna Wintour. "It was on that trip that I met Mitch Besser, founder of mothers2mothers, and the Mentor Mothers, who are the most remarkable women I have ever met," she wrote in a statement published on the charity sale website. "I came back from South Africa and thought, what can I do to help? I started going through my closet and found so many great pieces that I’ve worn and thought, maybe I can raise money by auctioning these off...I just want to do whatever I can do.”

In April this year, it was announced that the former pop idol was planning to become a goodwill ambassador for the United Nation’s UNAIDS. According to UNAIDS, there were an estimated 24.7 million people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa in 2013 – the highest in the world. In that region, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda together accounted for 48 per cent of all new HIV infections in 2013.

Here's a look at some of the garments up for grabs in the charity sale:

In 2006, Victoria Beckham wore this bright yellow Roberto Cavalli gown to a pre-World Cup party.

Posh Spice's erstwhile bob (dubbed the Pob) was once a trendsetting haircut. In 2007, she sported a blonde Pob and this Louise Feraud dress at a Chanel fashion show.

In 2008, she had a pixie cut and went on a double date with Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in this Antonio Berardi dress. Both the haircut and the friendship seem to be things of the past, but the dress is now available.
