SINGAPORE: An average of 15,000 Direct School Admission (DSA) applications is received by secondary schools each year.
Education Minister Heng Swee Keat said this in a written parliamentary response to Nominated MP Janice Koh, who had asked for an update.
Mr Heng noted this figure includes students who may have applied to more than one secondary school, and does not reflect the number of unique students who applied under the scheme.
About 2,800 students get admitted through the DSA scheme each year.
Around 15 per cent of them are from the Gifted Education Programme (GEP).
Mr Heng wrote these students were selected based on their strengths and achievements in both academic or non-academic areas, like sports and the arts, rather than because they were in the GEP.
Fifteen per cent of students admitted through the DSA scheme were based on their strengths, abilities and achievements in the arts while 35 per cent of students were accepted through their performance in sports.
