SINGAPORE: About 160 ITE students who study built environment courses have received scholarships from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).
The BCA Built Environment ITE scholarship, which was announced in January last year, aims to attract more locals to the growing sector.
Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin handed out the scholarships at ITE College Central on January 28.
It is the first time BCA is awarding scholarships to ITE students.
The scholarship covers a student's full course fees and provides a monthly allowance of S$500.
Recipients would have to serve a two-year bond with firms in the sector when they complete their studies.
A recent BCA survey found that a majority of built environment firms are planning to hire this year.
The survey said firms hope to fill three in five positions with Singaporeans.
Mr Tan said the sector is transforming itself to have more emphasis on knowledge and design, with a focus on information technology.
He said: "You're right smack in the middle of this transformation. So it's not only both exciting, in terms of what you can learn professionally, but more importantly, I think it's tremendously exciting in terms of what you can impart and what difference you can make to improve the quality of life for all Singaporeans."
