Care, diversity and dedication needed in helping students reach their best: Heng Swee Keat

Helping each child be his best takes dedication, care, and diversity in schools and programmes, says Education Minister Heng Swee Keat

SINGAPORE: Helping each child be his best takes dedication and care.

Posting on his Facebook page on Sunday, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat also said as children learn differently, they need to be supported differently according to their needs.

So he's glad there's diversity in Singapore's schools and their programmes.

Mr Heng noted that new resources and programmes are being rolled out to help students excel in various areas, including academic subjects, sports and the arts. And he indicated that more will done.

"We must continue to push the frontiers of learning, and will continue to resource schools in ways that can make an impact on learning," he said.

In his remarks, Mr Heng also emphasised the importance of character development.

He said: "Yes we want to nurture individual talents so that our children may excel, but it is equally important to develop the heart in our children, to teach them the ethos of care so that it becomes second nature for them to give back.

"Of course, this learning applies for us as adults too -- in or out of school, we can always pay more care to those who need more support, and keep on giving back to create a continuous virtuous cycle that uplifts everyone," he added.

The remarks come as teachers and students get ready to return to school after the long Lunar New Year weekend.
