Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam says this is if ASEAN is to play a pivotal role in advocating cooperation, peace and stability in the region.
SINGAPORE: It is crucial to continue promoting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) central role in the regional architecture, if the association is to play a pivotal role in advocating cooperation, peace and stability in the region, said Foreign Affairs Minister K Shanmugam on Monday (Aug 25).
Mr Shanmugam, who is also Law Minister, made this point at a reception at Mandarin Orchard hotel to mark ASEAN Day. He added that existing ASEAN-led mechanisms have and will continue to play an important role in managing regional complexities.
Mr Shanmugam also presented a prize to 19-year-old Khairul Azri Uthli, who is the winner at the national level of the first ASEAN Youth Competition on Arts and Human Rights. His artwork, titled "Born without worry", envisions how life would be like when the concept of human rights is fully realised.
