Event organisers hope to encourage busy Singaporeans to set aside time to share a meal with family members.
SINGAPORE: Close to 200 organisations and schools have signed up to take part in this year’s Eat With Your Family Day on Friday (May 30). This year's online highlight: A newly-introduced “family selfie” competition.
The 12th edition of the event, which also falls in the International Year of the Family, is meant to create an opportunity for Singaporeans to set aside a day to share a meal and spend time with family members, organisers Centre for Fathering (CFF) said in a statement.
Said Ms Claire Nazar, a council member at Families for Life: “Food is the way to the heart of many Singaporeans. In the midst of our hectic schedules though, we can sometimes forget to take the time to plan regular meals with our loved ones, or allow ourselves to get distracted by our electronic devices during meal times.”
However, organisers hope participants pick up their smartphones for at least one moment during the meal to take part in a “family selfie” competition. Organised by the CFF in partnership with the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF), the public can take photos of their dinners with family members and upload them on to MSF’s Facebook page.
Dining vouchers worth S$100 will be given out to five winning photos with the most heart-warming captions. This will be determined by a panel of judges and winners will be announced on June 13, MSF wrote on its page.
“Through this competition, we hope to create a repository of family bonding ideas by Singaporeans, for Singaporeans,” said Mr Peter Quek, CEO of CFF.
