SINGAPORE: A 28-year-old fishball factory worker had to get his arm amputated after it was trapped in a meat grinder.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the incident at 15 Woodlands Loop on Thursday.
Upon arrival, SCDF paramedics set up a saline intravenous drip and administered oxygen through a mask to stabilise the man’s condition.
As the victim was losing a lot of blood, SCDF officers decided to separate the grinder from the rest of the main machine.
The man was then taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) with the grinder still attached to his arm.
Rescuers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) worked together with specialists from TTSH's Hand and Microsurgery department to release the trapped hand from the grinder.
TTSH said the grinder was successfully detached from the victim's arm.
But due to the severity of his injuries, part of his left arm needed to be amputated.
The man is currently in a stable condition.
