Good writing key to strong foundation in arts: Lawrence Wong

SINGAPORE: The government can build more infrastructure and more arts spaces -- but without good writing, the arts does not have a strong foundation.

Culture, Community and Youth Minister Lawrence Wong said this at the opening of Centre 42 on Monday morning (July 7).

Located at Waterloo Street, Centre 42 is dedicated to playwriting.

Mr Wong said: "Good writing underpins a lot of artistic pursuits, and this can be in theatre, film or TV. And even if you have a good story, you also need good scriptwriters to translate the literary work into a script.

"So there is a lot that we can do to develop these capabilities, and that was the basis for the setting up of a centre like this."

The centre is also looking into several ideas to help develop the arts industry. One is the possibility of providing practitioners with free use of production space in the centre.
