Offering pro-family job options good way for firms to retain talent: Grace Fu

Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Grace Fu, has said that offering family-friendly employment options to employees is a good way for companies to retain talent. She said this during a visit to OCBC Bank on Friday.

SINGAPORE: Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Grace Fu, has said that offering family-friendly employment options to employees is a good way for companies to retain talent.

She said this during a visit to OCBC Bank on Friday.

OCBC has been recognised for putting in place family-friendly workplace practices to help staff achieve better work-life balance.

Ms Fu said incentives are already in place to encourage companies to do more in this area, and the government is constantly reviewing what is needed to ensure this is achieved.

But fewer than 20 per cent of companies currently do so.

Observers said some smaller companies are worried it will be expensive to implement pro-family employment options.

Ms Fu said they needed to change this mindset and view such options as a strategy to attract talent, rather than as a cost to the company.

Moving forward, NTUC wants to see an enhancement to the Tripartite Guidelines on Family-Friendly Practices to also cover caregivers with dependents, and Ms Fu said the government will support this.

She said: "We do have different needs over our life cycle, sometimes we have young children and sometimes we have elderly parents to look after. And a system that is flexible, customisable and is able to be tailor-made to the needs of the employees will be one that is sustainable and also will be positive for the business."
