SINGAPORE: Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Grace Fu visited the Turkish Embassy in Singapore on Friday to sign the condolence book for the victims of the coal mine accident in Turkey.

Ms Fu, who is also Second Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Environment and Water Resources, wrote: "On behalf of the President, Government and people of Singapore, I offer my deepest condolence to the people of the Republic of Turkey over the tragic deaths as a result of the coal mine accident in the Soma district in Manisa, Turkey.

"Our thoughts are with the people of Turkey during this difficult period.

"We are confident that the Turkish people will overcome this crisis with fortitude and resilience."

At least 284 people died this week and 18 remain trapped in the coal mine, three days after a fire knocked out power and shut down the ventilation shafts and elevators, trapping hundreds underground in Turkey's worst ever mining disaster.
