HCJC marks its 40th anniversary

Though no longer existing in name, the spirit of Hwa Chong Junior College lives on, as it celebrated its 40th birthday on Saturday (Aug 23).

SINGAPORE: Though no longer existing in name, the spirit of Hwa Chong Junior College lives on, as it celebrated its 40th birthday on Saturday (Aug 23).

A total of 750 guests, including Hwa Chong alumni and board members of Hwa Chong Institution, attended a gala dinner at Resorts World Sentosa to mark the occasion.

Speaking at the event, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat paid tribute to the college's pioneer batch of principals and teachers, some of whom still teach at the school today. He also spoke of the need for schools like Hwa Chong to remain inclusive.

"Established institutions like Hwa Chong cannot become ‘closed circles’,” he said. “Our academically-able students have to be exposed to diverse backgrounds to build empathy and understanding. This is essential if we are to build a compassionate meritocracy that rewards effort and talent regardless of social background, while guarding against elitism and exclusiveness."
