Hokkien classes at Nee Soon South CC help volunteers communicate with elderly

Nee Soon South Community Centre's Basic Hokkien Conversational Class is believed to be the first such programme for volunteers.

SINGAPORE: Communicating government policies - such as MediShield Life and the Pioneer Generation Package - to elderly Singaporeans could be a challenge for some volunteers, but the Nee Soon South Community Centre may have just the solution for volunteers.

The centre has started a Basic Hokkien Conversational Class, believed to be the first such programme for volunteers.

The first of 10 weekly sessions was held on Wednesday night (Aug 13), with about 30 volunteers, including several non-Chinese, signing up for the class.

MP for Nee Soon GRC Lee Bee Wah said there are plans to roll out this initiative to the other community centres in Nee Soon, if the response is positive. The constituency has five community centres.
